The Spanish word animo also means spirit, energy, vitality, purpose and will. Thus, the Bedan Animo also means the Bedan Spirit. However, as an idiom and cheer, we Bedans use animo to mean COURAGE just like any other Spanish speaking society. When we Bedans yell "Animo San Beda!" we actually mean "Courage San Beda!" We also used Viva (long live) and Arriba (hurrah for ...) in the old Spanish cheer. Avance San Beda! was also used before. Even in our traditional English cheer, Stand on the Grandstand, animo is extensively used. From our Stand on the Grandstand cheer came the very popular "Animo ______ Beat ________" line which other schools adopted, but just a stand alone cheer. San Beda College has been historically using "Animo" more frequently than any other school in the country. We Bedans distinguish ourselves from the pack for we historically and consciously know that Animo, when used to cheer, means courage. |
